Dev: “Why do y’all pirate games?” Pirates: “$!@#ing DRM and…”
Actually, despite my catchy title, the pirates were fairly civil and forward about their responses.
The story: Cliff Harris of Positech Games asked the app cracker community why they crack games and put them in the wild.
The update: One articulated version of the most popular answer can be summed up this way: Save money on those stupid DRM addons, thereby lowering the price of your game and un-crippling it in the same stroke. The developer who asked, decided to take that advice.
It’s a heart warming story – no, seriously – of changing the conversation between business and the rest of us. So, here’s that link juice for Ars Technica, as if they needed it.
Jumpgate Evolution
At this moment, there is a growing sliver of light growing in the world of sci-fi and space simulation massively multiplayer online games. On one side of the fence you have Eve-Online, a distinct powerhouse in the genre of science fiction space flight games, and not to mention a difficult universe to traverse. Eve-Online is renowned in the unforgivingness and player driven political solar systems. Which gives it a lot of appeal, however, it’s a difficult game to overcome, with long training times and shifty corporate business’s. And with Eve-Online setting the stage for other games in the genre, at this moment, thats about as good as it gets.
Until now.
If your into this scene of piloting craft through roid populated systems either mining or waiting for an unsuspecting victim to crush, then there is no doubt in our minds that you’ve heard of Jumpgate Evolution.
Jumpgate Evolution is one of the most promising games being developed at this time to compete against Eve-Online. Graphically stunning, JGE throws players into a different approach to craft navigation and player interaction compared to others. Offering a unique twitch based combat system, it will allow players to engage in dogfighting unlike the multi click orbit scheme of Eve-Online, bringing the player a more visually stunning and intense atmosphere while tackling an opponent.
I myself am looking quite forward to playing Jumpgate Evolution. I’ve already signed up for the beta, now I’m just waiting for the opportunity. More will come on this most anticipated release.
How to become a hacker…er cracker?!
I have read many a discussion in forums where one would ask, “How do I become a hacker?” What would normally follow is a long discussion of programming languages that one would need to learn to become such a hacker.
What a lot of newbies do not realize or may not be aware is what exactly is the definition of a hacker. The term, “hacker” may have nothing to do with penetrating firewalls, defacing websites, and the such. To some one it may just mean getting the comuter to do what you want it to do.
Now I do not believe that every newbie out there is thinking of becoming such a hacker. I do not belive that what they are asking is how to become a nerd with no life who is going to spend the rest of his or her life behind computers working for as a computer security analist at some company.
One does not really need directions on how to become a geek. All you need to do is to sit all day in your room and sit behind the comp.
I can understand the real hackers. They are only explaining what the person is aksing for but that is not what he or she wants to hear.
So here in this article I am going to explain on how one becomes a hacker…er cracker. It is very important that we do not confuse the two words.
I am going to assume that the reader already knows the difference between the two. So I am not going to explain what it means to be a hacker or a cracker. Google is there to help you with that!
I am writing this article in order to educate others as well to express my oppinion. The later of which I am going to do towards the end.
Like I have said one of the things that have prompted me to write this was the some times tedious disscussions on hacker boards on how to become a hacker. What I believe these newbies should be asking is how to become a cracker. The term it sels has a bit of negative conotations. The word hacker is which is widely misused has more of a possitive meaning as opposed to the word hacker. So I believe people rather use the last with out really understanding its meaning.
Of course you do not want to come to a forum and ask people on how to become a criminal. No one is really going to help you out with that. Unless you know for sure there are load unethical people on that board. Because a cracker in essence is a criminal. A cyber criminal but a criminal never theles.

The Word “Nub”
I’ve been playing Combat Arms off and on lately, and I’ve noticed a lot of people using the word “Nub”; it’s the most irritating thing in the game.
Every time I see that word typed, I think of the word “Nub”, as in “My arm got chopped off and all that’s left is a nub.” Really it’s supposed to mean “New-Buh”, like it’s just a shitty way of spelling “noob”, “n00b”, “newb”, or it’s derived word “Newbie”.
Wikipedia defines “Newbie” as: “a slang term for a newcomer to online gaming or an Internet activity. It can also be used for any other activity in whose context a somewhat clueless newcomer could exist. It can have derogatory connotations, but is also often used for descriptive purposes only, without a value judgement.” Players use this fucking word like it’s some new Internet meme, they use it more frequently in Combat Arms than I’ve ever seen in a first-person shooter game. The bonus part: I’ve asked some of these fucktards if they even knew what it means and I’ve gotten a range from “I don’t know.” to “It’s what you are.”
MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO SAY “NUB” DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.
-I’ve heard people say “Nice shot, nub.” after the person who typed this died from a headshot.
-I’ve seen people call each other “nub” through the course of an entire game, while both parties achieve competitive scores.
It’s my guess that these people aren’t just kids, like grown men are saying this just as much, and a good chunk of all of them don’t know anything about “nub”, they probably even pronounce it as “nub” as I originally read aloud in my head.
Am I the only person this pisses-off? Leave a comment with your “nub” stories and peeves.
Cheer10s: A Flyninja Project
Well, since Cheer10s is a Flyninja Project, I have to talk a little about what’s about to go down with it here. I’m moving to Tucson, AZ to be with my girlfriend and to live in a condo I’m buying. I have to get access to the Interwebs. So, Cheer10s will probably be slow for a few days. Sorry about that. Once I get interweb access at the condo (after the 15th) I’ll speed it back up to it’s optimal pace.
Cheer10s.com is a news syndicate for the hacker community. Originally started by Circuitbomb, Maboroshi, and bad-brain as an e-zine, it turned into a repository for news relevant directly (and not so directly) to the hacker community. While not directly a “hacker site” we frequent hackers, computer security types, and general readers interested in the hacker mentality.
